Usual!

She came home from a crazy day at work, changed into her house clothes, tied her hair into a bun. And drank a hot cup of tea, while surfing TV channels.

She turned on the radio, tuned it to AIR, less babble the better, she thought. She chopped the vegetables she planned to cook, she liked chopping them precisely. She often wondered why she put so much effort into it. But he liked how she chopped them. She was making his favorite dish, she did not want to mess it even a little. She liked cooking, specially for him.

She heard his car brake in front of their gate, she rushed to get the door. She opened it even before he rang the bell. He leaned in and kissed her. After greetings and small talk, he went in to change, humming the song that was playing on the radio.

She finished cooking, he laid the table, both of them sat together and relished Rajma Chawal. He had told her how much he loved her for being the perfect wife that she was. She jokingly rebutted saying, he was praising her only because she had made his favorite dish.

They then sat together and watched TV, swapping between serials and the news. They then went for a walk in the quiet roads, discussing work and life. They also made plans for the weekend and the future in general. When her mom called her in the night and asked how her day went by, she said, it was the usual.

Today, as he lay in the ICU, after being hit by a truck, she was yearning to be with him and do those things again. She would give everything and anything to go back to the usual and feel the usual.

  1. Beautiful story. Life can be unpredictable. Sometimes it's better to have a predictable, yet happy life.
